Did someone say Rubies? (Update)

Coming on the heel of all these great music announcements I have one of my own to make.

Bodyjar

Bodyjar are playing another gig at the Rubies lounge in Belgrave on Friday 16th November.

While I’ve already seen these boys play at rubies this year I just can’t pass up the opportunity to see them again. If you’re interested let me know so we can get the crew together and hit the hills.

*Update: I just read that Bodyjar have a new album in the works so here’s hoping that they play some new stuff at the show. It’s also been announced that Blueline Medic will be supported Bodyjar in their one and only Melbourne show this year. Now I’m really excited this is going to be one sweet gig so make sure to get your arse down to Belgrave for a great night of music.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Discuss.

So you want to be a champion?

Hi guys,

Thought I would write a post about the Grinspoon gig I saw at Ferntree Gully last night.

Fu, stu, tre and Gav kicked off the night with some ‘fuck off’ sized food and some beer at Captain America’s which is a little restaurant right around the corner from the Ferntree Gully hotel. Looked at the size of their meals it’s no wonder american’ts came up with the term ‘Super Sized’. Another american’t stereotype was met when I tasted their piss poor version of a pale ale. Just a note guys pale ale is not the same as a larger. Anyway onto the show.

I’ve you’ve never been to the Ferntree Gully Hotel your not missing much as it’s a bit of a dive. Being originally from the m.t Dandenong area I wasn’t surprised with the amount of bogan bums around but I was with impressed with the size of the venue and how many people were there. The show was sold out and I think someone mentioned that there was about 1000 people there which is pretty good for a gig at a hotel/bar.

We caught the start of ‘Something For Numbers’ act and even though they all looked like a bunch of 16yr olds they played some pretty good pop rock music. They even had some girl next to us dancing a crazy spastic dance at one stage.

After another 30min of soaking in the beer, bogus and bitch’s Grinspoon finally came onto stage at about 11:00. They kicked it off with their first single Black Tattoo from their new album ‘Alibis and other lies’. It was a great start and really rocked. They then played a pretty much non-stop 1 1/2 hr set with most of the songs coming off their last 2 albums. Songs that I can remember them playing include Outside looking in, Leave it, Gun for hire,Find your own way (all off their new album),Bleed you dry, better off alone, chemical heart, hold on me (From New detention and Kills,Thrills & Sunday pills) and sweet as sugar.

Highlights included pretty much any of their back catalogue with older fast songs such as Hard Act To Follow, More Than You Are and their new song What You Got was great and had an awesome chorus (Giddy up, POW!). One of my favourite songs 1000 Miles was really fast and loud just the way I like it.

I was actually surprised with the number of acoustic songs that they played and how the crowd really got involved in them. I didn’t actually know that Phil could play acoustic guitar and considering his vocals are rather rock orientated they sounded really good. He even pulled out the harmonica at some stage which is always cool.

By the end of the night most of my buddies were drunk and somehow they managed to join in a moshing ring with some locals without getting either a shiv or a punch to the face. To finish off their encore Grinspoon played an old classic Champion which Stu and Gav had been requesting all night. Since they were the only 2 shouting out for this song it just goes to show what you can achieve through a little perseverance and a lot of drunken shouting.

After the light’s had come back on it was crazy to see how much broken glass and bottles were lying around the place. Since the venue was mostly carpeted I assume most of that shit will still be there next time I come back, for the guns & roses, bon jovi & kiss tribute night on the 19th October.

In the parking lot after the show we saw Phil and the Grinspoon boys nearly ran down some local bogans in their rush to get the hell out of bums town.

On a last note if you’ve never been to a music night around Mt Dandenong do yourself a favor and check one out. If you’ve read my previous post Gyroscope + Rubys = Best Gig Ever you won’t need further convincing but it does come with the Crazyman’s guarantee of awesomeness (Note: Not valid outside Australia).

Music News

How’s it going everyone ?
As the music scenes fairly quite at the moment i just thought i would write a little post about some of the music that will be coming our way later in the year.
For those that love a bit of old school punk don’t forget to get tix to the bad religion and strung out double header at festival hall on the 19th November. Even though it will be bitch hot summer at that stage its going to be a great. Both of these long time punk veterans have released awesome albums recently and i’m really looking forward to this gig. Actually since the music scene’s so dry at the moment its the only show i’ve got tickets to. I was thinking of getting tix to muse (14th Nov) but as general admission sold out within minutes i guess that decision has been made for me.I think there’s still seat’s still available at Rod laver arena but at $83 thats just for chumps. I will however will be trying to get tickets to the kings of leon gig at festival hall on 8th January. Tickets go on sale on Friday the 14th of September for ~$45 dollars for anyone who’s interested in going.
One album definitely worth looking out for in the coming months is The dropkick murphy’s album titled ‘the meanest of times’ out 18th September. I saw these guys live at the start of the year and so far out of the 12 or so bands i’ve seen none have been able to knock them off from being the gig of the year.
The next ambitious Thrice release titled the Alchemy index will be released as a 4 part EP collection titled after the four elements. The first two parts will be released on 13th October with the remaining to be released next year. I think an accurate term for this kind of release is ‘epic’ and hopefully the band will have enough quality songs to fill 4 whole albums. The only band that i can remember to have done a release like this was system of the down with their double release EP’s ‘Hypnotise’ and ‘mesmerise’ back in 2005.
Wilhelm scream’s interestingly titled new album ‘career suicide’ will also be out in October on the 9th.
The long awaited Foo fighter’s album ‘Echoes, silence, patience and grace’ should be out September 25th and if the single ‘the pretender’ is anything to go by it will be an awesome album. In the video clip you can see that Dave Grohl has grow his hair long again and is going back to his grunge nirvana look (except for the fact he doesn’t look as stoned). I’ve heard that they have got back with their old producer from the colour and the shape so things are looking good for this album and thankfully it won’t have any wanky acoustic tracks like their last one did.
I’ve left the best till last as i only recently found out that there is rumour of a reel big fish and less than jake double header show at the end of the year. www.punknews.org has recently released a tour schedule which indicates that they will both be playing at billboards nightclub on September the 12th December. So far there’s no mention of the show on the billboards nightclub site but if it’s to go ahead then this show will really rock hard. I saw the fish earlier in the year and as always they put on a really great show. Even though i only started listening to less than jake last year with their last album release i just can’t get enough of these guys and have been getting into all of their older stuff.Anyway fingers crossed that both these great bands will come out at the end of the year and play a show as it should take the crown as being the best of the year.

I didn’t think it could happen

Saw Dropkick Murphys and Reel Big Fish last week and hands down I think these two shows are going to be sitting pretty at the top of my ‘Gig of the Year’ list come the end of the year.

The common link between both of these gigs was the lack of ‘attitude’ and general sense of enjoyment had by all where in a time of Emo where dudes either have a chip on their shoulder or are just trying that little bit too hard to be cool (or not cool I can never work that out) it was great to be at surrounded by like minded people who were there to have a bit of a sing song and a jig.

Both bands were brilliant while delivering a solid and lengthy set.

I don’t think you could fault either show and to have that happen twice in the same week in what is becoming ‘The year of the gig’ took me by surprise and left me with a big dumb smile on my face.

Bigger The Better

Alright, so the first official Big Day Out announcement has been made and I’ll cut to the chase with the line up so far…

Tool
Muse
Violent Femmes
The Killers
Peaches
My Chemical Romance
Spank Rock
Jet
Eskimo Joe
Scribe
Evermore
The Sleepy Jackson (Aus only)
The Herd (Aus only)
The Spazzys (Aus only)

The dates and locations…

FRIDAY JANUARY 19th AUCKLAND MT SMART STADIUM
SUNDAY JANUARY 21st GOLD COAST PARKLANDS
THURSDAY JANUARY 25th SYDNEY SHOWGROUND
SUNDAY JANUARY 28th PRINCES PARK SOUTH
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2nd ROYAL ADELAIDE SHOWGROUND
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4th CLAREMONT SHOWGROUND

Tickets go on sale Friday the 13th of October for $115 plus booking fee so probably looking at around 130 bunge…

Now that looks like a pretty good line up. It may be because I’m getting old but I think I would prefer to see bands like Tool, Muse and the Killers in a smaller venue. After seeing Muse a couple of years ago at the Big Day Out it would have been much better to see them in a close intimate gig. Playing outdoors just didn’t do it for me. They were great don’t get me wrong but it was lacking the intensity and atmosphere that you would expect for a Muse gig. I could see this being the case for Tool and the Killers also.

Either way, are you going to go and what do you think of the line up so far…?
