‘Best Of’ Awards

Hi everyone.

As we’re reaching the end of 2007 I thought now would be a good time for our loyal hundredpennies listeners to vote on what they think were the best entertainment releases of the year. To make your decision easier and refresh your memories I’ve listed down all the nominations into separate areas such as album, gig, T.V, movie, video game, gadget and beer. Keep in mind that these lists aren’t definitive so feel free to tell me anything I’ve left out. The total number of votes will then be counted (shouldn’t be too hard as there’s only 6 people who actually read this site according to the comments) and the winner of each category will then be announced on a future ‘Best Of’ podcast special.

Big Gay Out

Just found out today that the second lineup for the big day out has been announced.

Silverchair, Spoon, Augie March, Brand New, Regurgitator, Anti-Flag, Karnivool, Carl Cox, Pnau, Kate Nash, Josh Pyke, beXta, Shy Child, Gyroscope, Enter Shikari, Operator Please, Unkle (live), Goodwill, Krafty Kuts & MC Dynamite, Die! Die! Die!, The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello acoustic),Blue King Brown, Dr Octagon with Kutmaster (Just missing the letter ‘N’) Kurt, British India, Aceyalone and Krill (mmm tasty fish)

While I was a bit ‘meh’ over the first bands that were announced this 2nd lineup actually has me interested. What shits me is the fact that its taken them this long to actually tell us that these new bands will be playing.

I would have brought a ticket straight away if I knew I could listen to Gyroscope (I haven’t seen them this year), Brand New, Anti-flag, Regurgitator,Operator Please (yes please) and hell even Silverchair (well at least their older shit before they became gay).

As the online tickets were all sold before this announcement the only way to get tickets now is to go into an online ballot. This kinda sucks as A: there’s only 2000 available and B: they’re going to draw out the whole process by only allowing 200 to be sold per week. At least i’ve already got a ticket to the Soundwave festival but fuck you big day out for screwing me over. Totally gay I say.

E-Games 07

Today after work I attended the E-Games 07 exhibition on at the Melbourne exhibition centre. What I will say is that it was very similar to last year and was around the same size. I would say that if you have a Wii and are interested in the up coming games then it might be worth having a look around. I did see Mario Galaxy and I must say it does look good and I look forward to getting my hands on this game in the next few days.

Nintendo had the most on show this year with a large number of Wii games. I did not spend a lot of time at the show as had just finished work and really wanted to have a beer. I spent some time with the PS3 and got to see Assassins creed in action and I must say it does look spectacular. The only 360 game that I had a look at that was not out was Mass Effect and this also looked great and I think it will be a big seller heading into Christmas.

Other games to check out if you attend are Sing Star for the PS3 if you are into that. On the Wii you can see the Wii Zapper in action with the link’s crossbow game.

Overall I would say not to go to this event especially if you are an Xbox person as not much was on show for the 360 that won’t be out next week.

Rock On.

Big Day Out 2008 – 1st Announcement

So the first announcement for the 2008 Big Day Out has been made and the initial lineup will look as follows:

  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Björk
  • Grinspoon
  • Arcade Fire
  • Hilltop Hoods
  • Billy Bragg
  • Paul Kelly
  • LCD Soundsystem
  • Sarah Blasko
  • Faker
  • Midnight Juggernauts
  • Dizzee Rascal
  • Something with Numbers
  • Battles
  • Cut Off Your Hands

Is that enough to drop $125 plus booking fee or do you need a little more pepper to spice it up?

Wanted: Inverock 05 Photos

Quick shout out to see if anyone has photos from Inverock 05.

I seem to have pictures from 04 and then jump straight to 06. I know Inverock is normally a pretty hardcore drinking fest and loss of memory is a common occurrence but to not have any memories of the whole thing?! ‘cmon!

Bigger The Better

Alright, so the first official Big Day Out announcement has been made and I’ll cut to the chase with the line up so far…

Tool
Muse
Violent Femmes
The Killers
Peaches
My Chemical Romance
Spank Rock
Jet
Eskimo Joe
Scribe
Evermore
The Sleepy Jackson (Aus only)
The Herd (Aus only)
The Spazzys (Aus only)

The dates and locations…

FRIDAY JANUARY 19th AUCKLAND MT SMART STADIUM
SUNDAY JANUARY 21st GOLD COAST PARKLANDS
THURSDAY JANUARY 25th SYDNEY SHOWGROUND
SUNDAY JANUARY 28th PRINCES PARK SOUTH
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2nd ROYAL ADELAIDE SHOWGROUND
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4th CLAREMONT SHOWGROUND

Tickets go on sale Friday the 13th of October for $115 plus booking fee so probably looking at around 130 bunge…

Now that looks like a pretty good line up. It may be because I’m getting old but I think I would prefer to see bands like Tool, Muse and the Killers in a smaller venue. After seeing Muse a couple of years ago at the Big Day Out it would have been much better to see them in a close intimate gig. Playing outdoors just didn’t do it for me. They were great don’t get me wrong but it was lacking the intensity and atmosphere that you would expect for a Muse gig. I could see this being the case for Tool and the Killers also.

Either way, are you going to go and what do you think of the line up so far…?

SOAP

It’s official! One of the greatest cinematic experiences of our time Snakes On A Plane will be hitting Australian cinemas on the 24th of August 2006.

One critic said that this movie is “A puzzling journey through the minds of two retarded 12 year old boys.”

I’m not sure if there is a midnight session as yet but either way I am seeing this movie!

Ode to my car

After 3 glorious years of service including a few speeding tickets, a few bingles, numerous rock outs ,more drive through takeaway visits then a starving bum could dream about and all the good times you could wish for, my trusty Kennedy is being put out to pasture or “the wrecking yards.” The time has come to face the facts, he is getting on a bit in years and he is starting to fall apart like a leper on a jumping castle. He rattles and groans and has bits falling off and hanging out, not to mention his slightly abused exterior. Fear not though there is a replacement coming, whose name is tba,so you guys won’t be without your driver, and the good news is i can strip Kennedy for all the parts i want to keep, as long as it is safe for the guy collecting him to drive him away. So peace out my t(rusty) iron steed, you have served me well, i wish i could give you the blaze of glory that you deserve but frankly i need the money.

Hey guys please feel free to add your own memories or just dumb, irresponsible stuff you remeber doing in my car.

To Be A Whipping Boy

I watched the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games last night and I still can’t decide if it was any good or not.

I think at one stage I saw a koala cross human thing running around in a dirty pair of y-fronts.

The giant flying tram was pretty cool but from there it got a little weird.

It needed to be a little more ‘Melbourne’ I thought and what better way than borrowing from the AFL Grand Final performances! Do you remember the rather feminine looking guys in footy gear dancing provocatively with each other? Oh oh and what about Angry Anderson and the Batmobile! That would’ve put bums on seats!

Also there was no reference to stabbings which seem to be a very Melbourne thing to do these days.

Either way let me know what you thought and what you would have added to make it that little bit better.

On a side note, I’ve got a second interview for the job I went for last week so keep those fingers crossed for me will ya?!

Only a few more sleeps until Coheed and Cambria, XBOX 360 and my mega fatman lazy weekend!
