So you want to be a champion?

Hi guys,

Thought I would write a post about the Grinspoon gig I saw at Ferntree Gully last night.

Fu, stu, tre and Gav kicked off the night with some ‘fuck off’ sized food and some beer at Captain America’s which is a little restaurant right around the corner from the Ferntree Gully hotel. Looked at the size of their meals it’s no wonder american’ts came up with the term ‘Super Sized’. Another american’t stereotype was met when I tasted their piss poor version of a pale ale. Just a note guys pale ale is not the same as a larger. Anyway onto the show.

I’ve you’ve never been to the Ferntree Gully Hotel your not missing much as it’s a bit of a dive. Being originally from the m.t Dandenong area I wasn’t surprised with the amount of bogan bums around but I was with impressed with the size of the venue and how many people were there. The show was sold out and I think someone mentioned that there was about 1000 people there which is pretty good for a gig at a hotel/bar.

We caught the start of ‘Something For Numbers’ act and even though they all looked like a bunch of 16yr olds they played some pretty good pop rock music. They even had some girl next to us dancing a crazy spastic dance at one stage.

After another 30min of soaking in the beer, bogus and bitch’s Grinspoon finally came onto stage at about 11:00. They kicked it off with their first single Black Tattoo from their new album ‘Alibis and other lies’. It was a great start and really rocked. They then played a pretty much non-stop 1 1/2 hr set with most of the songs coming off their last 2 albums. Songs that I can remember them playing include Outside looking in, Leave it, Gun for hire,Find your own way (all off their new album),Bleed you dry, better off alone, chemical heart, hold on me (From New detention and Kills,Thrills & Sunday pills) and sweet as sugar.

Highlights included pretty much any of their back catalogue with older fast songs such as Hard Act To Follow, More Than You Are and their new song What You Got was great and had an awesome chorus (Giddy up, POW!). One of my favourite songs 1000 Miles was really fast and loud just the way I like it.

I was actually surprised with the number of acoustic songs that they played and how the crowd really got involved in them. I didn’t actually know that Phil could play acoustic guitar and considering his vocals are rather rock orientated they sounded really good. He even pulled out the harmonica at some stage which is always cool.

By the end of the night most of my buddies were drunk and somehow they managed to join in a moshing ring with some locals without getting either a shiv or a punch to the face. To finish off their encore Grinspoon played an old classic Champion which Stu and Gav had been requesting all night. Since they were the only 2 shouting out for this song it just goes to show what you can achieve through a little perseverance and a lot of drunken shouting.

After the light’s had come back on it was crazy to see how much broken glass and bottles were lying around the place. Since the venue was mostly carpeted I assume most of that shit will still be there next time I come back, for the guns & roses, bon jovi & kiss tribute night on the 19th October.

In the parking lot after the show we saw Phil and the Grinspoon boys nearly ran down some local bogans in their rush to get the hell out of bums town.

On a last note if you’ve never been to a music night around Mt Dandenong do yourself a favor and check one out. If you’ve read my previous post Gyroscope + Rubys = Best Gig Ever you won’t need further convincing but it does come with the Crazyman’s guarantee of awesomeness (Note: Not valid outside Australia).

The Good the bad and the ugly

Hello again,

Last weekend was one great weekend did some really fun stuff with the locals from work. We went bowling and I got 149 Hell yehh but god damm it took so long to play. When you go in it looks all good and normal but about every 4 shots it fucks up and some dude has to get into the machine and reset the pins. It also does not help when the power just goes off for 10 mins. Latter on that night we went on a rickshaw ride up a mountin to this kick ass bar of sorts and had a few brews (Canon 10,000 8%) and some very nice food. The night was going very well and we were going to hit up a nightclub so the local who we were with was trying to work out a good price for our rickshaw driver this turned into an argument and next thing we all had to go down to the cop shop as this “head rickshaw dude” had put our friend in a headlock as we did not agree to the ripoff price. We had to spend about 1 hour so the cops could write up a report it was funny stuff as they were hitting the shit out of the ricki driver. We finally got out but we were in the middle of nothing and it was pissing down with monsoon rain. We finally managed to get back home but it was one crazy night on the town.

Missed 2 days of work unfortunatly due to some gastro bug that was not very nice but I am all good now and thankfully it is Saturday. The dees lost to Carlton again what the hell is wrong with us? Anyway back in a week talk to you all soon.

Rock On!

Cheap Beer Good food and shitty roads

Hi people,

Just a quick hello from India. Well it is 3:00pm and I just got back from work which is a 1 hour drive from the hotel and this is traffic is not too bad. The roads can be really good for like 1 K and then for the next 10 they are filled with pot holes and boulders that just sit in the middle of the road. Went for a fun ride in a cab yesterday he was one crazy driver he would be on his horn the entire time and several times we went down the wrong site of the road to overtake and just get back on the correct side and miss a bus by inches. The Autorickshaw is fun but if it is dusty this can be bad and if wet not so good. Was raining all weekend so could not see much hopefully next weekend.

Beer is very very cheap I got a 6 pack of 650ML kingfisher for $6.50. On Friday night we went to a hotel called the royal palms you can get cheap beer about $1.50 per bottle and they make a heep of cocktails for like $3 now this is my kind of place. We got a taxi had a heep of beer and went home all for about $22 sweet as. Can not drink at our hotel as cost way to much they charge like Aus pricing so you just grab a 6 pack and hit the pool and then get room service to come out and open your beer.

The food is great and again very cheap. Not as hot as I was thinking it was going to be. At work it is great you go to the lunch room at 12 and get a full kick ass lunch I could really get used to this. We went to a shopping mall and you would not guess what they had? Nando’s hell yeh.

Well that is it from me will check in again latter in the week. I am up for snakes in a plane that is going to rock hard. I was a bit worried on the flight over to India about snakes on my plane.

Rock on!

The Best of 2005

So the new year is already here and I hope you all had a great 2005.
I’m a little slack at the moment (I’m on holidays, deal with it!) so I didn’t get round to posting my ‘Best of 2005′ in 2005 so here it is bitches…!

Best Gig of 2005
‘Gyroscope at Rubys in Belgrave’

What started out as a quiet Thursday(?) night, Dan the Man, Stu, Doug, Pete and myself cruised down to Belgrave to check out Gyroscope, The Hot Lies and Behind Crimson Eyes.
Besides more than your average amount of beer being drunk, Gyroscope rocking so bloody hard, a mosh pit consisting of 5, we all ended up ‘behind the magic bookcase’ hangin with the bands.
I’ve been told that my interview method and questions were second to none.

Honorable Mention
Mad Caddies followed by Supper Club, Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger

Best Album of 2005
Gyroscope ‘Are You Involved?’

The second full length release from Gyroscope was a killer and easily earned the title of best album.
Hell I’m still giving Sound Shattering Sound a thrashing so I’ll still be listening to Are You Involved way into 2006.

Honorable Mention
Wolfmother ‘Self Titled’ and Coheed and Cambria ‘Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness (This could probably be the longest album title of 2005 if not all time!)

Beer of 2005
Chimay

It’s expensive as hell and brewed by Monks.
Nuff said.

Honorable Mention
Carlsberg and Sol (a very very late inclusion to the best of)

TV Show of 2005
Arrested Development

Even though Arrested Development is already into it’s third season, no show seems to be quoted and watched repeatedly by myself and the rest of the hornbag.net crew.
I’ve said it a million times before but this is one of the best comedies of all time. It’s well written, has an awesome cast and the call backs and plot twists are second to none.

Honorable Mention
Top Gear, Lost, My Name Is Earl and Prison Break

So that’ll do for now… have a great 2006

Monkeys

Hey all whats up ?

What a suprise that the socceroos lost again.
As in true soccer style it was a high scoring game of 1- 0.
What else can i say, but that im disappointed.
Actually i can say something else, GET YOUR FUCKING ACT TOGETHER SOCCEROOS !
God damm every time the world cup qualifying comes round we bloody choke.
Sorry for the ranting, but i got up @ 7:00am on a friggin Sunday, which should be against the law or something.

Anyway apart the intial bad start to the day things rapidly improved.
A kick arse BBQ breakfast, and then off to the zoo to see some monkeys and giraffedogs, with Fu, Stu and Jacks. Then a secondary BBQ for lunch, and then saw the elephants which were pretty cool.
After a afternoon siesta I was ready for my 3rd BBQ of the day and man was it good !

Well stick a fork in me jerry i’m done.

Inverock the plank

What can i say, inverock rocked !
These are some of the things i learnt when up at inverock.

1. Never buy 1 donut or you will get chumped (1 for 50 cents or 8 for 2 bucks, WTF)

2. Never steal a wheely bin or you will fall into a ditch and get covered in poo, and have to make up a song that goes a little something like this (I’ve got poo in my pants lets dance)

3. There’s no way you can eat all 40 different varieties of pies, because by the time you eat about 10, you will have forgotten which pies you have already eaten, and you will have to start again.

4. Sleeping in a booth can be comfortable if you’ve drunk chamay and vodka on the rocks

5. Tropical strength aeroguard does not kill flies and does not taste like tropical icecream

6. Don’t try and dump your rubbish in a skipper, without having a get away plan (Hey thats my bin)

7. White stubby holder will get covered in blood and brown

Until i can remember more stuff

Hug that shit out bitches

Fish Fingers

Stu, Jamie and myself went to the HiFi Bar last night (on a Tuesday! not cool) to see Goldfinger and Reel Big Fish carve it up like a christmas dinner.
All in all it was a pretty damn good night as I was a Goldfinger virgin (that sounded better in my head) and man those guys are true entertainers with these guys crowd surfing and at one stage the drummer surfed from the stage all the way to the back bar and if you have been to the HiFi that’s a champion effort.
I think Goldfinger put on an hour set that consisted of about 6 songs, was really weird because it wasn’t a huge set list but was a long one and rocked nice and hard and those crazy boys seemed to be having a great time so all in all I’ll give them 4 fish fingers outta 5.
I saw Reel Big Fish a few years ago and they were really good and inbetween then and now they have gone through a fair amount of shit with band members leaving / being shown the door but the gig in general was pretty good.
Scott (my favourite) was not there due to sickness which sucked major ass.
I’m not going to post too much about the fish beacuse they were good and put on a nice show. The general feeling is that this may be the last time we see the fish make it to our shores so it was good to just be there and soak it in.
The Fish….? 3 fishfingers outta 5

The Writing Writer

procastination is too easy to not do it.
i’ve had so many things to do recently but have always found too little time to do them
i have no idea if the above makes sense but that is how i feel at the moment

either way i have been up to a few things in the last week or so that i haven’t really touch on so lets break it down and see what happens…

– been listening to the new 3rd album from coheed and cambria interestingly titled ‘Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness’ and it’s a pretty shit hot disc from the geekiest of bands (it’s a long story so ask me about it sometime) and if you liked their other discs than you’ll lap this one up as if it was puppy chow. if you have yet to hear coheed and cambria go give it a shot, it may be an aquired taste but definately worth it in the long run… gotta give it a big 5 outa 5

– went and saw gyroscope on satday night with hels, stu and scotty. i’ve come to expect a top notch show from these boys and am happy to saw that i left i with a smile from ear to ear. the new stuff is sounding awesome and the old stuff well… it didn’t make one of the best of albums for 2004 for nothin. shout out to the hot lies too as they were pretty good also. gyro will be playing the corner later this year for the new album so get down there.

– looks like this friday is going to be a games night at the lodge with a few of the boys wanting to play poker (i have no comprehension of the game) and xbox and what not. should be a fun night with beer and hot dogs a la lodge. will take some photos if i remember

– fathers day was on sunday, shout out to all of the dads. had mine over for a bbq and went down a treat

– i’m currently maybe possibly if all goes well but no guarentees due to banks and leaving messages for old woggy dudes in the process of buying a newer (and smaller) car. i won’t give too many details at the moment but yep it’s a ‘chick bomb’ and i’ve had farts with more horsepower but it’s all part of my grand plan… or is it?

– watched season 1 and up to date on Entourage and i’m kickin myself i didn’t get into it earlier. great show which is very well written and acted if you can look past the fast cars and women. worth the watch me thinks

– last but not least for now anyway, work is going really well. crusin though and making money is what i like doing best so i can’t complain. word on the street is that there is going to be some ‘big news’ this week but so far nothin. i’ll let ya know if anything ever comes of this rumor

anyway that’s about it for now, have a great week and i’m still fuckin around on this site trying to have it up to scratch but as i mentioned at the start i’m just not finding the time….!
whatever forever amen

music for mutes

ah the sweet smell of mondays…
how’s it all goin for ya? hope you had a great weekend drinking, sleeping, working, reading harry potter… whatever you like to do with yourself.
not too much has been happening at my end of the world but i must be up to something because i never seem to find any spare time!
bring it back and lets break down the weekend old style…
– finally got the bbq cranked up and even though the weather was a little ‘fresh’ still cooked it up like a mutha and after more than a year a part we still got it :)
– bought the new singstar pop dvd to add to my collection and…

a few people + a few brews x singstar pop = a fuckin top night

– last night i was spotted at pj’s on southbank to farewell one of my favourite gypsies mitch as he’s off to sydney for a few months and we all had a fun night with a great turnout with some people i hadn’t seen in a while. if we’re lucky gyps might keep us up to date on what he’s up to right here on the bag
alright i’ve got a couple of other things to write about but i might give them their own posts so have fun and catch ya all soon if ya good!

Sinatra Theory

went to the evelyn on friday night with hels , pete and lorna to see a few bands and sink a few brews.
all bands put on a top show with personal highlight being irrelvant.
i haven’t seen these guys before or listened to their album from start to finish but fuck me man what an awesome band and what an awesome set!
these guys rocked hard and had energy a plenty. haven’t seen a band get stuck into it like they did for a long time. 3 thumbs up for this one, if you missed it well tuff titties you missed a killer show
nice work guys and all the best to ya and hope to see ya live again real soon!
