It’s a Trap!

Posted by: Gavin In: Shout Out! ()

This post was originally going to be a rant but I think it shall be more of a community service announcement.

While I was perusing mininova I noticed something a little strange. A number of torrents tagged as an axxo release were all of the same size 722.52MB.

Not only were these releases of the same size they were also DVD rips of movies that have just come out in the cinemas in the US.

It was pretty clear that something was a little suss and from a quick search it was found that these torrents were fake and planted by the MPAA in a bid to collate the IP addresses of pirates (argh!)

To avoid getting stung and having your IP added to an Excel spreadsheet somewhere here a few tips:

1. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
2. Seeds are key. If no-one is seeding it. Why?
3. Read the comments!
4. Look for the real deal. If it’s a legit upload the user will be in red. See below for an example.
While I do not condone piracy I do have a problem with entrapment so take care and enjoy. Argh!
Update: Looks like the good folks at mininova are on the ball and the offending torrents have been removed but keep an eye out as they’ll just try and try again. *sigh*
