News Time

Ok today I thought I would cover a few things in the world of music.

In breaking news Coheed and Cambria have decided to tour with Linkin Park (why?) and as a consequence they have decided to pull the plug on their trip down to Oz for the Soundwave festival. While I’m not really a fan of the lead vocalist I heard that they put on an awesome show and play some kick arse guitar licks in the style of Wilhelm Scream so I’m kind of disappointed that I won’t be seeing them live, though probably not as much as Gav. This is the second bad news from the festival following on from Social Distortion’s announcement that they were also pulling out from the show. At this rate the only headline band left playing will be Offspring.

Speaking of which (now that’s how you do a segway), Offspring have posted some studio footage for the recording of their new album that will be out some time next year. Oh Joy! (can you sense the sarcasm). As I can’t figure how to post video’s on this site I’ll just put the link up here. As the two video clips are only 25 seconds long and both feature the same song it">here. As the two video clips are only 25 seconds long and both feature the same song it" />#8217;s probably a good indication that they’ll be stretched to write any good material (it could be said that they haven’t done this for about 10yrs). However I was surprised to see that they actually had a real drummer as I always thought on the last 2 albums they just used a synthesizer to manufacture all their beats. The other clip even has Dexter giving Noodles a hug. Ohhh how lame.

Some punk releases that I will actually be looking forward to next year include Anti-flag’s album titled ‘Bright Lights of America‘ and Milencollin and Rise Against’s as yet untitled releases.

In other album news it has been announced that Pennywise’s next album will be released free (that’s right free) through myspace. Originally this sounded suspiciously similar to what Radiohead have recently done but I then discovered that the album will be ad sponsored through a mobile music company called Textango. What this means is that in order to download the songs you must first add Textango to your myspace profile as a friend (how gay).

I’m not quite sure how the advertising aspect will actually work at this point but enabling Textango as a friend sounds like ticking a box that says “I agree to this company sending me as much bullshit advertising as they want”. Considering that its a mobile music company it probably not much different to all those shit ringtone ads advertised on Foxtel all the time.

This stunt seems to be a desperate attempt by the music industry to try and salvage a sinking ship and here’s hoping that the above mentioned distribution method doesn’t take off and the album fails miserably. Even though Pennywise have said they are also releasing the album in stores it still doesn’t change the fact that they’ve sold out. What’s really disappointing about this whole release is that they used to have a strong anti-capitalism stance and were originally one of the pioneer punk bands to distribute their albums independently. In the world of Darren Hynch “Shame, Shame, Shame”.

On a related note Pete Wentz from Fallout Boy has recently tried to serve a cease and desist on the band Neurosonic for releasing a defamatory song about his current girlfriend Ashlee Simpson. The song titled ‘So Many People’ is rather substandard but it does have some pretty good lines including “You ugly girl, you cannot sing / Can’t even lip sync / Apparently money can even buy you dignity” and “Since practice wasn’t on the list / Clearly talent doesn’t exist… Whose dick did you have to suck to get that number one song?”.

Personally I think Pete should just get over himself and admit that his girlfriend can’t sing for shit (apparently either can he live).

That’s a bit disappointing, but as long as killswitch are still there to rock my socks off then that’s okay. I’m just listening to their newest album ‘as daylight dies’ and it is surely injecting some anger and hate into me as all good metalcore should. One review i read of this album said ‘if you take away the screaming and the massive wall of guitar distortion you’ll have a jimmy eat world album’ which pretty much sums up their poppy-riffiness, as it is well hidden by lots of angry noise. Overall, not as good as ‘the end of heartache’ but still pretty good.

And pete wentz can suck my dick.

That is some disappointing news. Lets just hope that the other bands don’t start dropping off. Looks like Coheed and Cambria think they are bigger then they really are and have just blown off Australia boo to them I say.
