Echoes,Silence,Patience and Grace

Hello all,

Just listened to the new foo fighters album Echoes,Silence,Patience and Grace and thought I would share some of my initial impressions. As I’ve only given a couple of listen’s and will probably give an update after I’ve given it more of a spin.

First of all I must say I was expected a lot from this release as the Foo Fighters got back with Gil Norton who was their previous producer from their 1997 recording ‘The colour and the shape’, which was my favourite Foo album. They’ve recently released a 10 yr anniversary edition and I must say that all songs still stand the test of time remarkably well. Anyway as Tre has previously pointed out the Foo’s will never be able to make a better album than that and therefore this album should be judged on it’s own merits.

The best description of this album would best be summed up as ‘acoustic/rock!’ The reason for the exclamation mark is due to the fact that a the start tracks on this album start sounding really acoustic and then explode into rock later on.

Now for a little description of some tracks

1. The Pretender: I’m sure most of you have heard this first single multiple times, but I just can’t get enough of this song. Starts out acoustically slow with Dave nearly whispering the initial lines and then bang in come the drums and then this track rocks hard for another 4.30 min. On a side note I can’t help but draw parallels between this opening track and the one on the album ‘One by One’. The self-titled song on this release was first released as a single way before the album came out and it had such an epic sounding rock song that I was expected great things. Unfortunately the rest of the album was a bit of a sleeper and had too many bland songs mixed between some pretty good ones. Anyway I digress. This track has it all, awesome riffs, catchy lyrics and even a break down in the middle. I would have to say this is definitely my favourite track off the album.

2. Let it Die: Again starts off slow acoustically and takes quite a bit longer to rip into its stride than ‘The pretender’ but once it does this track brings back memories of the slow burning songs found on ‘The Colour And The Shape’. A great song and I’m sure it will grow on me.

3. Erase Replace: Starts out well and keeps the rock vibe throughout the song. Easy to get into as the main chorus is repeated numerously and will probably stick in my head after a while.

4. Long road to ruin: Surprisingly no acoustic start on this one, which is best described as having a bit of a pop rock sound. Good but doesn’t really have much depth to it.

5. Come Alive: Back to acoustic. Gentle patter of drums and rather slow lyrics until the 3 min mark. After this it actually picks when the lyrics get more repetitive and when Dave throws in some screaming. Actually pretty good song by the end.

6. Stranger Things Have Happened: The most acoustic track yet, no drums just Dave and the guitar. Chorus is rather nice. Unfortunately brings back memories of the bonus album release with ‘In your honour’, if that’s your thing then I guess you’ll like this one.

7. Cheer Up Boys (Your Makeup is Running): Ahh back to a good start.  No acoustic, just rock. A little generic as the lyrics and chorus isn’t anything special. Based on the title was actually expecting a song deriding the emo bands out there but seems like it has nothing to do with that.

8. Summers End: Rather catchy and the title is rather appropriate as it has rather an upbeat sound. It’s a relaxing song and could grow on me after a few quite listens while kicking back and drinking beers.

9. The Ballad Of The Beaconsfield: No lyrics just guitar, but all Australian’s will know the whole story behind this anyway. Best described as a ditty.

10. Statues: Should have been put on their acoustic ‘In your honour’ album. Slow, boring and doesn’t go anywhere. I would have to say at this point the whole album for me unfortunately goes downhill. No Rock = boring shit

11. But honestly:  Title sums it up. Honestly enough with the acoustic shit I’m getting bored of it. Better than the last track but that’s only because it finally rocks out at the end near the 3min mark, but it’s a little too late with only 1 min to go.

12. Home: If they carried on the momentum from the last track and amped up on this track they could have really had something special to finish with. While it’s rather of a nice song it just doesn’t have enough grunt and balls to really finish this album on a high note. Interestingly it does have piano in it, which is probably a first for the foo’s and maybe a sign of things to come.

13. Once And For All (Bonus Track): Not too bad actually and would have been much better placed between tracks 10 and 11 to break up the boredom. Since it’s a bonus track it might have originally been left of the album, which makes me wonder what else didn’t make the cut.

Well, quite a lengthy post as per usual but here as some of my final thoughts. This review might come across a bit negative but as I’ve mentioned earlier it’s only my initial impressions. No matter how hard I try I can’t help but make comparison this with their previous albums and therefore my standards are a bit high.

I’ve now listened to the album again on my mp3 player at work while writing this review and have had to tone down the volume quite a bit. Maybe playing this album through a good stereo and cranking it up would give a bit more life to some of these songs and would bring out the rock arena vibe that Foo’s are renowned for. As Tre has mentioned their last album ‘In Your Honour’ really benefited from being blasted out at ridiculous volumes to really get the most from it. I think if all the boring acoustic songs were replaced with catchy rock tracks like from  ‘In Your Honour’ this album really could have been something great.
My initial conclusion is that ‘Echoes,Silence,Patience and Grace’ is better than ‘One By One’, and after a few listens maybe equal with  ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’, but doesn’t come close to matching ‘The Colour And The Shape’ and even ‘In Your Honour’.
Feel free to give your comments, opinions, views or even if you just want to talk about discuss all things Foo (And no I don’t mean Christian aka: Fu).

The Beat Goes On

Apple released their iPod offensive for the holiday season and that’s them above.

iPod Shuffle

The same iPod Shuffle but with fresh new colors. Move along people nothing to see here.

iPod Nano

From the pictures I’ve seen I consider the Nano to be the ‘Ugly Duckling’ of the family however I don’t think pictures will do the new ‘FattyPod’ justice until it is in your hands in the flesh. It’s definitely a great upgrade on features which include larger storage space, video playback, games, new UI (user interface) and a host of other goodies that will make what is already the most popular iPod of all time a massive seller.

iPod Classic

From what I can see the only reason the iPod Classic exists is due the fact that it is the only iPod which will store your music library in your pocket which was the original tag line for the first iPod. Coming in at a very impressive 160GB of storage (the only iPod which still uses a traditional hard drive) and also sharing the same new UI and features of the Nano the only reason I see the Classic sitting in the current iPod family is due the ‘restricted’ storage of the new iPod Touch which I will go into more detail next.

iPod Touch

This is the iPod that a lot of people had been wishing, expecting and hoping for. It’s basically an iPhone minus the phone and with some cosmetic improvements like a smaller form factor. It has built in WiFi which is used for the new wireless iTunes store and also for Safari which will let you browse the net wherever you want (as long as you are in a wireless hotspot). Running OS X like the iPhone I would expect the hacking community to come out with additional applications and modifications in the very near future to take full advantage of the Touch’s awesomeness. I was just about to enter my credit card details and lay down some hard earned green for the iPod Touch until I saw the storage specs… 8GB and 16GB. This is and will be a deal breaker for a lot of potential buyers. Frankly this is not enough space. I know they could have squeezed in more but the reality is that if they did it would cock block the iPhone which comes with 8GB of storage also. Expect that the revision 2 of both the iPhone and Touch will include increased storage and I would expect a minimum of 30GB when the time comes. Is it worth buying the new iPod Touch? Well it really comes down to storage. If you are content with a maximum of 16GB then go for it as that is the only reason why I won’t be buying one. If the iPod Classic and Touch had a sexy love child that could hold 80 – 120GB I would have already bought two.

On a side note the iPhone has dropped US$200 which is great news if you haven’t bought one and bad news if you have.

It’s for your own good.

It’s been getting a little too highbrow round here lately so I thought I’d bring it back with some platinum youtube so please enjoy this dog on a skateboard.

It’s for your own good. Trust me.

Snap,crackle and POP!

Was just reading this article,

http://blogs.theage.com.au/noisepollution/archives/2007/09/_a_boffin_in_th.html

(Hopefully this plug will stop me from getting accused of stealing stuff from their site).
Some psychology boffin in Britain has recently released the formula for creating perfect pop music which goes like this,

Pitch + % of Positive Lyrics + Tonality + Beats Per Minute + Images And Memories Associated With The Music + Serotonin Level = The Feel Good Factor

I previously heard something similar to this about Rivers Cuomo who is the songwriter from weezer. Supposedly this guy has an “Encyclopedia of Pop” which is a three-ring binder which has details about pop and rock songs and how to write a perfect catchy song. Now this could be bullshit, but considering how many great sing along songs they have written (Buddy holly, el scorcho, say it ain’t so, hash pipe, island in the sun, keep fishin, dope nose) it could be true.
Anyway supposedly the top song fitting this formula was some UK shit that i’ve never heard of called ‘Wake Up Boo!’ WTF. The rest of the list has a number of Michael Jackson songs and a beatles song as expected. An unexpected choice was The Darkness hit ‘I believe in a thing called love).
I was just wondering what other people thought about this list and what they think is the ultimate pop song.
I’ve decided that this formula can also be used to determine which is the best pop music video. For me it’s really a hard decision between The Operators with ‘The pingpong song’ and the Alex Gaudino song ‘destination unknown’. While ‘destination unknown’ isn’t exactly a pop song per say i think it definitely fits into the formula as follows.

Pitch:10/10
I think this song is perfectly pitched to men out there and therefore this clip scores maximum points from me.

% positive lyrics: 5/10
To be honest i’ve never really payed attention to the actual lyrics as i’m always watching the video clip. Giggidy!

Tonality:10/10 Does sexy count as a tone ? Giggidy,Giggidy !

Beat per minute: 10/10
As this is a techno pop type song i’m sure its got a high BPM ratio. However my definition of BPM is Boobs Per Minute and therefore if you’re watching the video clip then the rating is 100. Actually maybe i should count how many women there are in the clip and multiply by 2. Giggidy, Giggidy,Giggidy !

Images And Memories Associated With The Music: ?
How can you rate this? As far as I’m concerned the video clip has given me enough memories to last a lifetime so therefore it gets an in-definitive score. Giggidy, Giggidy,Giggidy Giggidy!

Serotonin Level: 10/10
Well how can this song not make you happy

The final score = The feel good factor = 45
Converted to STD (Sexy Time Disorder) score = Giggidy, Giggidy,Giggidy!

Now compare this to the ping pong song

Pitch:10/10
It’s got like 16 yr old girls singing in it, so of course its high pitched.

% positive lyrics: 5/10
Well depends on how much you like ping-pong

Tonality:10/10
There’s lots of bright yellow and purple tones in the videoclip

Beats per minute:5/10
There’s plenty of bobbing beats and jumping in this clip. However they lose boobs per minute points as they’re only teenagers and are fairly flat chested.

Images And Memories Associated With The Music: 2/10
Unfortunately this song is only about ping pong and that’s about the only image i can associate with the music. However they do get an extra point for wearing cape’s and jumping around like dickheads.

Serotonin Level: 5/10
Again depends on how much you like ping-pong

The final score = The feel good factor = 37
Mind you in a few years a couple of these kids could be hot and then they would get an extra STD score

So the winner is ‘destination unknown’. Try it with some of your favourite song video’s and see what you think.

So till my next ranting, have fun.

Music News

How’s it going everyone ?
As the music scenes fairly quite at the moment i just thought i would write a little post about some of the music that will be coming our way later in the year.
For those that love a bit of old school punk don’t forget to get tix to the bad religion and strung out double header at festival hall on the 19th November. Even though it will be bitch hot summer at that stage its going to be a great. Both of these long time punk veterans have released awesome albums recently and i’m really looking forward to this gig. Actually since the music scene’s so dry at the moment its the only show i’ve got tickets to. I was thinking of getting tix to muse (14th Nov) but as general admission sold out within minutes i guess that decision has been made for me.I think there’s still seat’s still available at Rod laver arena but at $83 thats just for chumps. I will however will be trying to get tickets to the kings of leon gig at festival hall on 8th January. Tickets go on sale on Friday the 14th of September for ~$45 dollars for anyone who’s interested in going.
One album definitely worth looking out for in the coming months is The dropkick murphy’s album titled ‘the meanest of times’ out 18th September. I saw these guys live at the start of the year and so far out of the 12 or so bands i’ve seen none have been able to knock them off from being the gig of the year.
The next ambitious Thrice release titled the Alchemy index will be released as a 4 part EP collection titled after the four elements. The first two parts will be released on 13th October with the remaining to be released next year. I think an accurate term for this kind of release is ‘epic’ and hopefully the band will have enough quality songs to fill 4 whole albums. The only band that i can remember to have done a release like this was system of the down with their double release EP’s ‘Hypnotise’ and ‘mesmerise’ back in 2005.
Wilhelm scream’s interestingly titled new album ‘career suicide’ will also be out in October on the 9th.
The long awaited Foo fighter’s album ‘Echoes, silence, patience and grace’ should be out September 25th and if the single ‘the pretender’ is anything to go by it will be an awesome album. In the video clip you can see that Dave Grohl has grow his hair long again and is going back to his grunge nirvana look (except for the fact he doesn’t look as stoned). I’ve heard that they have got back with their old producer from the colour and the shape so things are looking good for this album and thankfully it won’t have any wanky acoustic tracks like their last one did.
I’ve left the best till last as i only recently found out that there is rumour of a reel big fish and less than jake double header show at the end of the year. www.punknews.org has recently released a tour schedule which indicates that they will both be playing at billboards nightclub on September the 12th December. So far there’s no mention of the show on the billboards nightclub site but if it’s to go ahead then this show will really rock hard. I saw the fish earlier in the year and as always they put on a really great show. Even though i only started listening to less than jake last year with their last album release i just can’t get enough of these guys and have been getting into all of their older stuff.Anyway fingers crossed that both these great bands will come out at the end of the year and play a show as it should take the crown as being the best of the year.
