I got my greasy paws on Gears of War Monday (thank you Dicksmith for breaking the embargo) and have been giving it a right thrashing over the last couple of days…
Oh my god this game is brilliant.
There was a fuckload of hype surrounding this game as the ‘Game of the Year’, ‘Must Have Title for XBOX 360′ and the very ambitious ‘Best Looking Game Ever’ and ‘Best Game Ever’
I am happy to advise that this game wins everything hands down.
While this game doesn’t revolutionize the way people game it does provide a very fulfilling gaming experience that will have me going straight back to the beginning once I have finished it to play it all again.
One of the main highlights besides the drop dead gorgeous graphics (I was running down a flight of stairs and had to stop and look at the walls as I could see the paint peeling. The textures are amazing.) is that at any time in the game a friend can ‘drop in’ and play with you in a co-op mode which makes playing the game even more fun. You and your friend will be barking orders at each other while providing covering fire so you can flank the enemy and progress through the game.
I also enjoy the covering aspect of the game. You cannot go all guns blazing and if you do you will be dead in about 15 seconds. Cover and timing are key in this game and this carries over to multiplayer too. Gone are the fucking annoying games such as Halo where everyone is jumping around and shooting everywhere. That’s not war and it’s not fun either. Trying to hold your position and take out your opponent in a close combat where stealth and surprise are key is fun.
There are a couple of annoying (very little) issues with Gears of War but they are trumped ten fold by all the sheer awesomeness that this game delivers.
Best game I have played in a very very long time.

As I sit here writing this it is pissing down like a motherfucker…
Inverock has officially become an annual event with this year being the third installment of ‘Rock at the Loch’ and we have been pretty fortunate and blessed with some pretty good weather.
It’s been nice and sunny during the day and cool at night which to me is a pretty good combo. I can’t remember the exact temperatures that we get down there but a good guide I use is to see how red Jax’s legs end up. The redder they get the better the weather.
There was one day where it rained and that was the last day where I received a call from my dad telling us to ‘pack up and get going’ as it was stormin in Melbourne and within about one hour ir was stormin down there too which made for an interesting drive home.
I think Pete and Fu had a more interesting drive home but that’s another story and probably illegal…
So let me pretend to be a weatherman for a moment and let’s have a look at the forecast for this weekend…

That’s not too bad and there doesn’t seem to be any word of rain so hopefully it stays around there and maybe heat up a little.
Here’s hoping for a great weekend.
It is always our best intention to play as much golf as possible while celebrating Inverock.
Now don’t get me wrong there is always at least one round of Par 3 golf completed but due to severe hangovers and heat exhaustion games are aborted and the skill level is normally a minimum.
The Inverloch Par 3 course (home of the Inverock Invitational) is a brilliant course to play. It’s small (Par 3 only) looks the goods and is still pretty challenging with a couple of holes hitting over water where if you are blessed a ‘Jesus Ball’ may just save your game. The only complaint is if it’s hot there are a fuckload of flies which don’t help the concentration.
A course that I don’t think has been played but always a request from Fu is a trip down to Tarwin Lower. There is a very good reason why we don’t play Tarwin Lower and that is because it is shit. Picture a paddock and put a flag on it. Then add some cows and raw sewage. Bingo! That’s Tarwin Lower.
Hopefully things will be different this year with more golf played than ever and I know that everyone will be going down with good intentions, but only time and beer will tell.
