Best of 2004 – Music

Hi all it is Stu back again.

Well it is time for the best of 2004.
Best Live show 2004 – Winner – Mad Caddies at the Hi-Fi Bar – This was one hell of a great show it would be hard to get to see a better show then this one they came on stage played all the great songs went off stage after one hour and then came back for a 40 min encore and it really rocked.
Runner Up – Gyroscope at the Evelyn – This was also one great show Hornbag and Hornbagett came along and we all had one great time.

Best CD LP 2004 – Winner – Gyroscope “Sound Shattering Sound” – This was the best CD for me this year the good old Aus band from WA came out with a killer first LP and it is one dam fine CD. If you know me then I am 100% I have played you one of there songs and just to show you how good they are 2 of the songs from the CD are one 1 and 2 in my most played songs in iTunes with 15 plays each.
Runner Up – Green Day “American Idiot” – This is back to great Green day for me after a very disappointing last effort the boys have pulled out a great CD with this one and if you have not given it a go by now don’t be turned off by the single American Idiot it is much better then the title track would suggest.

Best Venue 2004 – Winner – Evelyn – This place was a great new venue for me before this year I had not been to a single show at this place but as this year ends I have seen 4 shows and they were all very good. I went to see Yellocard as they were known back then ( more on this issue latter ) great show then The Real McKenzies at this show I managed to land on top of another mosher all with a beer in my hand that smashed the hand of this dude but we both just got up and went back to having one hell of a good time. Then came Blueline and Pilot to Gunner this was also a great show but more laid back as it went very late. Then it was Gyroscope and well I have told you how good that was.
Runner Up – Corner Hotel – This place is one of the best venues in Melbourne it is just a great place to see a band and I did see some show’s this year a great one was Lagwagon one of the great Punk rock bands from the Fat roster.

Best Rising Talent – Winner – Yes yet again they have won its Gyroscope they are just so great and are the best new band I have found in a long time.
Runner Up – The Used – Now they might not be new but I see them as a Rising talent and after the new CD they unleashed on us all this year “In Love and Death” I feel they are going on to bigger and better things only time will tell.

Ok now to the Crap Awards.

Winner Crap Live Show – Yellowcard – This show would have to be the most disappointing show of 2004 it was just simply lame at great example of how a band can make it big and then not care at all for the fans who made them. I went to see them at the start of the year and it was a really great show so when they came back it was a no brainer I had to see them again Headlining the show and at a bigger venue like the Hi – Fi bar but it was CRAP they were not into the show at all and the crowd were very down and out not a good Mosh at all then they went off stage after like 40min and could not even grace us with an encore so I gave them a verbal spray not nice. I hope they did listen to some of what I yelled at them shame on you YellowCrap shame shame shame.

Winner Carp CD – This one was easy Grinspoon for “Thrills,Kills + Sunday Pills” Well after really getting big after the last LP from the boys in “New Detention” and I mean big they went from playing shows at the HI-Fi bar to selling out Festival Hall this new CD was a big letdown. Now my idea of why this was the case is one the lead singer does not drink now before they play a show and because they made it big and they just decided to try and go with the same format that made them big from the last CD and it was a big big Crap CD. Shame Shame Shame.

Well this is all from me I would like you all to get on and get you own list up in the Forum or post it in the comments section I will put up a new topic for you to put you best off for 2004 so go on get Posting people and if you are new to the site please register and put your comments up.

  • Best Live Show – David Bowie Rod Laver, This will be one of my all time best live shows. It was also my first ‘large scale’ concert and blew me away. Honorable mentions to , Blueline Medic, Yellowcard, Bodyjar, and Away From Now.
Best CD LP – Don’t have a favorite but more a top 4 as follows in no particular order –
    – The Killers – Hot Fuss , great little album with heaps of happy ass disco-rock dancin tracks.
    – Green Day – Americian Idiot , it’s been a long time boys welcome back and welcome back to the epic rock opera.
    – Gyroscope – Sound Shattering Sound , it sure does!
    – The Darkness – Permission to Land , a weedy pale dirty little english man screaming and strutting around in tight jumpsuits is the essance of rock. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Nuff said.
Best Venue – The Evelyn as Stu has already mentioned for all the same reasons , followed by the Hi-Fi , The Arthouse , and any pub in the greater Fitzroy area. Got to venture out to a few new spots this year. Will for sure be going to find more in 2005.
Crap Show – Didn’t really see one but I’m sure Rob Mills would’ve sucked.
Crap CD – Haven’t brought any shit CD’s but I’m guessing anything by an Australian Idol would suck dong.
    Well that’s about it from me I think. I’m sure I’ve missed heaps but it’s a start…

  • Look Guys, I Know that the groups i say you probably wont have heard of,
But i have been on an astonishing journey of Music Mayhem this year, with Drum and Bass and Breakbeat completly taking over my life, i think to the point where i even walk a little bit funny…. But hey thats for another day.

The Best Live show i saw this year was from quite a well known Englishman called Aphrodite who blew first Floor away around 3 months ago. It was by far the single best gig that i had ever been too, The Music took me for a ride, and left me severly dehydrated! But it was friggin worth it to see the worlds oldest and best D&B DJ going at it. The only downside of the night was that i was getting a bit self conscious of the floor maybe falling through… But hey at least i would have died listning to the music i love!!!

Look ive heard alot of great Albums this year… The best though i would have to say would be DJ Hyper from the UK and his WIRED compilation… Mate, when you can make a sugarbabes song something that you want to listen too, then you are a very talented man indeed!

Not far behind that would have to be a Tie between NZ Group Concord Dawn, with their Unique blend of Drum and Bass and Trance on their second Album Uprising. I recomend anyone listen to this album, its Like Caffine coming out of a speaker box!!! Amazing.
If you really want to Fly though, DJ Dieselboys newbie “The Dungeonmasters Guide” is the Album of the year. Hardcore i think is the way to explain this journey through DRUM AND BASS MAYHEM!!!

    Anyway,More from me later!!

    Thjis is the Gypsy Speaking!

  • music is undoubtably on a slide in recent times due totally, in my opinion, to shows like australian idol and the whole generic, one-hit-wonder djs with bad covers of old 80′s songs (call on me, anyone? fuck off!)

best album – american idiot, green day. notable second place – il nino with confession, just because it’s not hillary duff.

best song – transdermal celebration, ween. not sure if it was actually from this year, but hey i can hardly remember what i did last week so it doesn’t really matter.

didn’t go to any really standout shows, but best venue goes to retro just coz i puked on the dance floor (cheers hornbag, jack lives there now!)

and usher, fuck off i hate you

  • Gypsy – Am going to have to get some CD’s off ya and have a listen. I’m always up for something new. Sounds like you’ve had a killer year in the world of music.
Tre – Heh heh you puked at the Retro… One of if not THE event of 2004. Glad to be a part of it.

  • You Want them Hornbag, you got em!!!
Il compile some of my recent Favorites for you when i finally pay you that money that ive owed you for the past 6 months!! Haha
I know youl Apreciate my music, its Brilliant!

  • And P.S….. Tre! You puked on the floor at Retro? You Legend, i bet it doesnt beat the one you did in on of those little ground floor Asian toilets in Ko Phi Phi… Or Tried to puke in it anyway… Good times huh?
